Question - MenopauseWize: Could you tell us why we should use something that has or should we be using something that definitely has hyaluronic acid and ceramides, particularly during menopause? I remember that I used to use loads and loads and loads of moisturizer to the extent I came to using coconut oil, for myself just because the moisture would just get evaporated. I would apply tons of it, and my skin was still so dry.
Answer - Dr. Deepti Ghia, MD:
I think that's a really good point that you're bringing about hyaluronic acid because there's such a huge voice in the market for hyaluronic acid. So, hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is what our skin is made up of. The dermis does have components of hyaluronic acid. Now, this acid has the potency to absorb more than a thousand times its capacity of water - one molecule of hyaluronic acid can take a thousand molecules of water. So it attracts water and so it is a really good moisturizing agent, and it works well for most skin types. It's just that how many times each person needs to use will be different because it depends on the utilization. So if you're, drying up more, you may need more applications, or you may need combinations with other agents, and that's what you mentioned about ceramides. Ceramides are part of the skin, and in people who have dry skin or as in menopause, there's a change in the balance of the ceramides. So if you additionally apply ceramides on top, it helps to absorb water much better. The best time to put moisturizers on damp skin is when you just come out of the bath or shower and you've just pat dry your skin. It locks all that moisture into the skin, and it will give you a longer effect of your moisturizer.
