Question - MenopauseWize:
You mentioned that there is a reduction in collagen in the skin during perimenopause and menopause. There are a range of collagen supplements available in the market today. Is there any benefit in consuming collagen in the form of a drink or any other kind of supplement to actually replace the collagen in our skin at menopause.
Answer - Dr. Deepti Ghia, MD:
So if you go to see the scientific evidence for collagen, there's not much evidence available to support that if you consume it - it will change the loss of collagen that's happening. It's like, taking any source of protein - Collagen is a type of protein, which will be broken down into the amino acids, but it probably is broken down much easier than others because it is a better quality protein which is available. So most of the times collagen is from marine sources. Vegetarian collagen comes from mushrooms.
It helps in hydrating the skin and it has shown some improvement in terms of the luminosity and the hydration of the skin, But overall, its role as an anti-aging agent is questionable.
Question - MenopauseWize:
So, basically just make sure you're getting enough protein in your, food?
And if somebody wants to have collagen, you can always add because it (in safe quantities) because it is relatively safe. But it's not like something which is essential. The cost of collagen is very high. So I would rather distribute that cost into moisturizers or serums which I want, that which will definitely give you advantage in those terms, And instead of the collagen, if you have to give a balanced prescription, I would not add everything at one go because you need to see that the patient is following things. And then when they are doing their serums, and everything perfectly well and then they want to do something more, then perhaps the role of collagen comes in.
