Hot flashes can be disruptive, especially when they occur in your sleep and these are called night sweats. Poor sleep further leads to brain fog the next morning, mood disorders, poor food choices, weight gain, hypertension, and the list goes on. Find out how you can reduce your hot flashes and night sweats through non-hormonal supplements as I discussed this with Doctor Heidi Lescanec, a licensed naturopathic doctor.

There are a number of things that can make hot flashes and night sweats worse, so if someone's already reducing or avoiding those triggers, then excellent. They could benefit from some nutritional supplementation support. My favorite combination I actually learned from the incredible doctor Laura Bryden, and it's a combination of the mineral magnesium with the amino acid taurine. So magnesium is a very important mineral that our body just dumps during stress mode. It is key for both muscle and nervous system relaxation and the best form is glycinate or bis glycinate and this is where magnesium is paired with amino acid glycine. That's calming and actually helps to drop our core body temperature which is so helpful for deep solid restorative sleep, hot flashes, or night sweats waking up or not. Then we pair it with taurine which is a calming amino acid that helps with thermoregulation—also other key things for the perimenopause transition like insulin sensitivity. And support our mitochondria, I recommend one to three grams before bed.
